Verified. Last reviewed 2026-10-05. Always confirm with the official source before filing.
Step by step
- Find the corporation. Search the Ontario Business Registry by name or Ontario corporation number.
- Choose the certificate. Select Certificate of Status from the available document products.
- Pay the fee. Pay online by credit card. The current fee is listed in the OBR at checkout.
- Download it. The certificate is issued electronically, usually right away.
When you'll be asked for one
- Opening a business bank account or applying for a loan.
- Selling or buying a business or its shares.
- Government contracts, tenders and some licence applications.
- Registering the corporation to do business in another province.
If the status isn't active
A corporation that misses annual returns can be dissolved. If the certificate shows the corporation is inactive or dissolved, file any missing annual returns and look into revival through the OBR.
