NUANS report: what it is and when Ontario requires one

The name search report you need before incorporating with a word name in Ontario.

Verified. Last reviewed 2026-10-05. Always confirm with the official source before filing.

Step by step

  1. Choose your proposed name. Include a distinctive element, a descriptive element, and a legal ending (Inc., Ltd., Corp.).
  2. Order an Ontario-biased NUANS report. Order online through NUANS, or through a search house or incorporation service.
  3. Review the results. Look for identical or confusingly similar names. Similar names don't automatically block you, but they raise legal risk.
  4. File within 90 days. Submit your articles of incorporation through the OBR with the NUANS report number before it expires.

Ontario-biased vs federal NUANS

Ontario incorporations need an Ontario-biased report. Federal incorporations under the CBCA use a federal NUANS report. Using the wrong type can cause your filing to be rejected.
