WSIB registration in Ontario: who must register

Workplace insurance for Ontario employers: when it's mandatory and how to sign up.

Verified. Last reviewed 2026-10-05. Always confirm with the official source before filing.

Step by step

  1. Check whether your industry is covered. Use the WSIB's classification tools to see if your business activity requires coverage.
  2. Register online within 10 days of hiring. Register through the WSIB website once you hire your first worker in a covered industry.
  3. Report payroll and pay premiums. Premiums are based on insurable earnings and your industry's rate, and are reported on the schedule WSIB assigns.

Construction businesses

In construction, most independent operators, sole proprietors, partners and executive officers need mandatory coverage. Contractors must also obtain clearance certificates for the subcontractors they hire.

What happens if you don't register

Employers who should be registered can be charged premiums retroactively, along with penalties, and are fully exposed if a worker is injured.
